While painting in the studio at this Umbrian art school, the artist in front of me stuffed these flowers in a vase on her table and ran off to do something else. I was mesmerized. Twenty minutes later they were captured on my paper, a fast, accurate, and exuberant painting that can happen only after days of slogging through the ordinary. Thank goodness for inspiration.
